Mecidiye Marşı (March of Abdülmecid) – Ottoman Imperial Anthem for Sultan Abdulmejid I (reigned 1839-1861), arr. J. Lee Graham (2021).

Arranger’s Note: According to my research, there are apparently two compositions titled “Mecidiye Marşı” attributed to Giuseppe Donizetti (1788-1856), this being the less famous of the two, but equal to the other in attractiveness and character. “Donizetti Pasha” (the honorific title the composer took while in service to the Sultan in Constantinople as Instructor General of the Imperial Ottoman Music) was the elder brother of the famous opera composer Gaetano Donizetti, and he worked to westernize Ottoman military bands; the Ottoman Empire had the first known military bands, so the tradition was very old, but the Sultan’s modern army called for modern bands, and Donizetti’s task was to help convert them from traditional Turkish wind and percussion instruments to European ones.

One could probably write a dissertation on the subject of military music in the Ottoman Empire in the 19th Century, but I was not able in all my reading to ascertain exactly what orchestration was usual in the Sultan’s European-style bands. I believe I have made a fair guess at it in anyway this arrangement, as it might have sounded around 1840-50. The tuba was very new at this time, but the ophicleide was available, and these two instruments have come to be regarded as interchangeable; otherwise, the instruments I employed were fairly widely available in the mid-19th Century, including horns and cornets with early valve mechanisms.
