In this One Critical Minute we focus on Cocaine. Cocaine is a natural alkaloid present in the leaves of the coca plant. Similar to amphetamines, cocaine causes an increase in dopamine and noradrenalin. It also increases serotonin. It is considered a stimulant and causes a sympathomimetic toxidrome. The dopamine creates an elevated, generally happy mood, with enhanced cognitive ability.
The noradrenalin causes an increase in strength and endurance.
And the serotonin causes a cheerful mood. All in all, you become a euphoric superhuman. But some people become aggressive. Beware of complications as described in the sympathomimetic toxidrome video: cardiac arrhythmias, hypertensive emergencies, agitation, aggression and seizures, dehydration and rhabdomyolysis. Cocaine is typically snorted. It can also be smoked (called crack), or injected. Onset of action is a couple of minutes, its peak is around 30 minutes and the duration of action is about 90 minutes tops.

Cocaine is highly addictive! Because of its short duration of action, the euphoria is short lived. People also develop drug tolerance, so they'll need more to get the same desired effect. As the dose increases, the adverse effects increase as well.
