Are you losing fat? Fat loss is something we all want to have happen as soon as possible. Unfortunately, losing fat takes time and there's really nothing we can do to speed up that process short of starving ourselves. But there are signs that we can use to track the progress of our fat loss even if we can't visually see the progress just yet.

While it's unfortunate that fat loss takes time, these three signs help us stay on track rather than giving up when we don't see immediate results. And these fat loss signs are also a good way to measure our fat loss progress in the beginning when seeing results aren't always immediate.

The first sign of fat loss is seeing the number on the scale go down. Scales are pretty accurate as far as giving you a number and as long as you see a general trend in weight loss from the scale, you know you are doing something right. However, one thing to know about using a scale is that it only gives you number that shows you are losing weight. It doesn't indicate if you are losing fat, or losing muscle or building muscle. So if you are losing fat but also building muscle, you may not see that number on that scale move much at all. This brings us to sign number 2:

Using progress photos to track your fat loss. Using progress photos, especially weekly photos, is an excellent way of seeing slow but noticeable progress. Depending on how much fat you have to lose initially, you may not see a lot of changes especially in your mid section. However, as time progresses, comparing these progress photos will show you that you are in fact, losing fat and that with time, you'll eventually reach your goals.

The third sign for fat loss progress is using a measuring tape. So if you are building muscle and losing fat, then a scale won't really give you a good idea of your body recomposition progress because the number may not change for a while. And if that's the case, you may not recognize that you are losing fat. However, a measuring tape will help determine if you have lost fat even if you can't quite tell from the scale or from the pictures.

Remember, when you are losing fat, it’s not just for aesthetic purposes, although that’s just fine if that is your goal. However, I would argue, that health reasons are even more important. Studies have consistently proven that evidence for the relationship of obesity to a number of comorbidities is quite strong. So if you find that your old clothes don’t fit you anymore or that you need to start tightening that belt, well, that’s a fantastic sign that you are slowly but surely losing weight. Yeah, you still don’t have a 6 pack revealed or even the beginning of a 4 pack, but your on that correct trajectory and with time and consistency, you’ll be there even if you can’t see your abs…yet. Another reason to use something like a measuring tape is if you are also building muscle during this process. As I mentioned earlier, the scales tell you your weight but it does little else outside of that. So if you are building muscle and losing fat at the same time (which again IS possible), you may not see that number change. A measurement of your waist size while you are building muscle might just indicate that you are, in fact, making progress in losing fat even if you can’t quite see it yet

So as you can see, these tools aren’t complicated. In fact, they are quite simple. Almost to the point where it seems obvious. Yes, when it comes to losing weight, it’s easy to say “Well, you have to be in a caloric deficit or you have to simply eat less than what you are eating now.” But the process of losing fat, while simple to understand, is still a long journey. And if you’re new to this, you don’t really know what that process looks like and it’s possible if you aren’t seeing results in a time frame you believe you should be seeing, that you may just quit. So these tools that I am suggesting, which admittedly are more qualitative than quantitative, are still quite effective provided that you know how to use them. And truthfully, I wouldn’t use any of these all on their own. They all kind of naturally support each other. Anyway, that’s it for today’s session.
