When the Colt factory rep stopped by The Armory Kissimmee location with 2 blue boxes, everyone around is interested. When he sits them on the display and says “ Here is a Python, and here is the new 2021 Anaconda, wanna borrow them?”, then everyone gets excited!! There are very few of these on the market right now, so YEA, we want to shoot it!!

The new Colt Anaconda is BEAUTIFUL, inside and out!! As we remove it from its box we see that familiar “Semi-Bright” stainless finish, classic vent rib, and full lug under the 8” barrel. Upon closer inspection, you’ll notice that the machining is on par with the old-school handmade Pythons. You can not see a machine mark on the gun, and the top of the rib has a really nice bead blasted, anti-glare finish reminiscent of Clots of years past.

We put her on the postal scale and she weighed in at a slender 53 ounces. Colt claims that this Anaconda is 30% stronger than past Anacondas, and judging by the weight it must be!

This Anaconda has an INCREDIBLE smooth hammer and trigger in both double action and single action. Lyman’s electronic trigger gauge told us Double action averaged 11 pounds, 7 ounces out of 10 trigger pulls, single-action was 6 pounds 5 ounces but felt MUCH lighter.

That afternoon at the range I got to know the Anaconda a little better! It was difficult to hold a tight group in double action, but that has more to do with my limited experience and skill when shooting a DA revolver than it does with the revolver's capabilities. In single-action however, even a beginner can place shots within a couple of inches from standing position at 25 feet! I put the first 26 rounds on the Shoot ’n See target with a combination of SA & DA shots. You would think that the 53-ounce heft of this revolver would tame the recoil more, especially when paired with this Remington HTP which is only scooting 1,180 feet per second at the muzzle, but after the first 3 cylinders were fired I began to regret not wearing gloves. Although the Hogue Grips are interchangeable with the Python wood grips (I took a video of a few shots through the python too just because it was there. It was AWESOME!) I would NOT want to shoot this Anaconda without the rubbers to soak up a little of the recoil.

Back up to the 50-yard line, firing at a 24” round steel target. Single action shots were pretty easy to hit but impossible for me in DA. 11 of 18 in SA, 0 for 6 in DA. But I must admit that fatigue had a lot to do with it at this point! My trigger finger started bleeding around round 35 where it contacts the frame and there was mild numbing setting in. I wish I had brought someone with me instead of a stupid tripod so that they could finish the last 15 rounds!
By round #50, I was done!

So, should you buy a new Colt Anaconda? No.

It would make an incredibly accurate hunting gun, or a fun range gun (IF you reload and can make some light recoiling loads!!) It is already a highly desirable firearm, and it will be more desirable as time goes on. With the recent acquisition of Colt Firearms by CZ we would imagine that the few Snake Guns that make it off of the production lines before the official takeover will be even more sought after.

So DO NOT buy a new Colt Anaconda. Buy 2!! 1 to shoot and enjoy, 1 to keep in the safe and pass down through your family for generations!
