"I Don’t Want To Get Too Big!" (Lean Muscle Vs. Bulky Muscle)
http://www.SeanNal.com/articles/train...

A very common question I receive (especially from my female readers) is how to focus on building lean muscle vs. bulky muscle and achieve a more athletic "fitness model look" as opposed to the "bulky bodybuilder" look.

Although this is a fair and understandable question, it really stems from a misunderstanding of just how slowly the muscle building process operates in natural trainees.

Even if a beginning male lifter does everything perfectly in terms of training and nutrition, he'll still be lucky to gain any more than about half a pound of actual lean muscle per week. For females, the rate will be about half that.

People are always telling me that they want to gain size but that they "don't want to get too big", but the truth is that this just isn't going to happen under any real world scenario. The growth process will happen so gradually that you'll always be able to see it far in advance and make adjustments if you need to.

For that reason, just focus on gaining muscle at your maximum rate whether you're trying to gain 10 pounds of muscle or 50. Intentionally trying to slow down the process is just going to increase your chances that you'll end up failing altogether.

On top of this, there is NO such thing as "lean muscle vs. bulky muscle". Muscle is muscle, period. You're either building it, maintaining it or losing it, and saying you want to "build muscle without bulk" really doesn't make any sense in the first place.

So the bottom line is to forget about the idea of getting "too big" or "too bulky" and just focus on optimizing your gains through proper training, nutrition and supplementation. Once you reach the level of development that you're happy with, you can THEN make the necessary adjustments to prevent further growth.
