Gspon is a village in the Swiss Alps, located in the canton of Valais. The village is situated in the eastern part of the canton in the Saastal valley above Staldenried at a height of 1,893 metres (6,211 ft). It belongs to the latter municipality.

Accessible by cable car from Stalden via Staldenried, Gspon is a car-free village and a year-round tourist destination. In winter Gspon's small ski area is open.

The village, characterised by its large green valleys and hills, is located in the Alps and is popular with hikers. Hiking is considered one of the village's main attractions along with other mountain-related activities. Gspon, which has a population of 585, also has a hotel restaurant and bar. Cable cars link to other locations above and under Gspon from the village itself.

The altitude of Gspon's football pitch is the highest in Europe at almost 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) above sea level.

Highlights and facts

Highest football stadium in Europe, the Ottmar Hitzfeld Stadium.
Hiking and climbing routes for all levels of ability.
Snowshoe trekking in winter.
St. Anna Chapel, built in 1691.

At an altitude of 1,899 metres (6,230 ft) the traffic-free village of Gspon is a starting point for both leisurely and challenging hikes. With no road into the village access is instead by cableway from Stalden via Staldenried. The village is the location of the St. Anna Chapel, built in 1691. The highest irrigation channels still in operation are located here while two ski lifts are open during the winter for downhill skiers. The landscape can also be explored on snowshoes during winter.

The Bischofwäg, leading from Staldenried through pine forest and the Breiterbach Gorge to Visperterminen, was the path along which the bishop of Sion travelled. Visperterminen has the highest vineyard in Europe on a sheltered slope at an altitude of 1,150 metres (3,770 ft). A green sign-posted viniculture theme path starts at Visp railway station. The Suonen hiking trail circuit to Finileri runs through forests and alpine pastures and alongside the historic irrigation channels. A more challenging trail leads from Gspon via the Gebidum and Bistinen Passes to the Simplon Pass.

The Saastal or the Saas Valley is an alpine valley in the district of Visp, in the eastern part of the Canton of Valais, Switzerland. It is the valley of the river Saaser Vispa. It is separated from the Mattertal to the west by the Mischabel massif. Villages in the valley are, upstream, Eisten, Saas-Balen, Saas-Grund, Saas-Fee and Saas-Almagell.

Until 1893, the municipalities of Almagell, Balen, Fee and Grund were a single parish, with the only church in Grund. Mattmarksee is a reservoir built in the 1960s.

The region hosts an extensive winter sports region, comprising the separate ski areas of Saas-Fee, Saas-Grund and Saas-Almagell. As well as individual ski passes a combined pass is available; each of these areas is connected to the other parts of the region by postal bus, rather than dedicated skilifts.

Valais (in French), or Wallis (in German), more formally the Canton of Valais,[a] is one of the 26 cantons forming the Swiss Confederation. It is composed of thirteen districts and its capital and largest city is Sion. The flag of the canton is made of thirteen stars representing the districts, on a white-red background.

Valais is situated in the southwestern part of the country. It borders the cantons of Vaud and Bern to the north, the cantons of Uri and Ticino to the east, as well as Italy to the south and France to the west. It is one of the three large southern Alpine cantons, along with Ticino and the Grisons, which encompass a vast diversity of ecosystems. It is a bilingual canton, French and German being its two official languages. Traditionally, the canton is divided into Lower, Central, and Upper Valais, the latter region constituting the German-speaking minority.

Valais essentially coincides with the valley of the Rhône from its headwaters to Lake Geneva, essentially separating the Pennine Alps from the Bernese Alps, the two largest mountain ranges of the canton. A major wine region, the canton is simultaneously one of the driest regions of Switzerland in its central Rhône valley and among the wettest, having large amounts of snow and rain upon the highest peaks found in Switzerland.
