One of a series of training films made for the U.S. Army Signal Corps, this 1943 film shows the techniques to set up telephone or electrical line poles. This particular film focuses on installation of crossarms. The crossarms multiply the carrying capacity of a telephone pole. At 1:19, arms are shown in a storage yard. Wooden pins are shown being installed in the arms. At 1:52, glass insulators are screwed onto a crossarm. At 2:10 a steel brace is installed. At 2:50 an installation team deploys with poles and crossarms. At 4:44, a truck is used to install a pole with a crossarm already installed. At 4:53, a signalman / soldier uses a hand line to get the arm up to the top of the pole. At 5:27, the soldier secures his safety line and starts the installation process. At 6:50 the crossarm is secured on the pole. At 8:00, transposition brackets are shown on the telephone lines.
