Why does salt dissolve in water but not in oil?

Oil and water are made of different types of molecules.
The molecules in water have positive and negative charges. One side has a slight positive charge while the other side is slight negative charge, this makes water molecule become attracted with many other different types of molecules. This makes water an excellent solvent.
Salt dissolves in water due to electrical charges and due to the fact that both water and salt compounds are polar, with positive and negative charges on opposite sides in the molecule.
We call such molecules with partial charges polar molecules. The molecules in oil have almost no positive or negative charge. We call these molecules non-polar molecules.

Polar molecules like to mix with other polar molecules. The molecules in salt are polar so they mix with water and not in oil.
