Teachers and organizations, some of whom are famous and well known, lure students into learning from them with their seemingly impressive knowledge. There are many red flags to alert one of a dangerous group. The first and foremost is a disregard or disrespect of Torah observance. Some are less overt and publicly claim they respect Jewish practice, but their actions demonstrate otherwise. This is an easy and obvious sign of a predatory or unworthy group. The true Kabbalists know the deepest secrets are united with the simple and straightforward fulfillment of the Torah, and their practice of Jewish tradition is precise and careful with simple devotion. Rebbe Nachman of Breslov even goes as far as to compare those who believe in the Torah but not in its physical application with Amalek, the greatest enemy of the Jewish People.
Other teachers expose their unworthiness to teach the Torah's secrets in their character and intentions. They might be Torah observant, unlike the group above, but their messages and rhetoric invoke fear and terror in their listeners. Little of benefit can be learned from such individuals.
True Kabbalah builds one's personal connection with the Creator. The verse says, "Her ways are pleasant ways, and all her paths, peaceful." And this is the sign of recognizing the pure and sweet Kabbalah that will not only bring one to a deeper understanding of the Torah but will uplift one closer to God's greatness and purity.
