Virginia Woolf (1882-1941) was a British writer and one of the twentieth century's most prominent modernist literary figures. She was born in London and grew up in a highly intellectual and artistic household. Woolf is the author of many novels, volumes of essays and short stories. Her writing is known for its stream-of-consciousness technique, in which the author presents a character's thoughts and emotions as they occur in mind without a linear narrative structure. Her work often explored themes such as gender, sexuality, mental illness, and the nature of reality.
Virginia was a central figure, a member and host of the Bloomsbury Group, initially founded by Vanessa Bell and Thoby Stephen - Virginia's siblings, in 1905 in their original Bloomsbury house. The Old Bloomsbury, the Bloomsbury Group or Bloomsbury Set, was a community of writers, artists, philosophers and intellectuals, mostly Cambridge, Trinity, or King's College graduates, known for their avant-garde ideas and bohemian lifestyle.
By the end of the 1930', the Group ceased to exist due to the disappearance of the most prominent members: Lytton Strachey (writer), Dora Carrington (decorative artist), Roger Fry (painter), Vanessa Bell and Jullian Bell (Vanessa's sister and nephew).
Virginia Wolf suffered from mental health issues for many years and ultimately committed suicide on March 28, 1941. Despite her troubled mind, Woolf remains a highly influential and celebrated figure in English literature.
