The U.S. Interstate Highway System might seem like a confusing mess at first. The names numbers: I-95, I-10, I-76 . . . It can all seem like a nonsensical jumble of letters and numbers at first. In this video, we take a deeper dive into the U.S. Interstate System, and examine its history, from humble beginnings to ultimately Dwight D. Eisenhower's master plan of the National System of Interstate and Defense Highways. Eisenhower, an experienced World War Two veteran, saw the need for civilian and military use of a strong interstate highway system, inspired by Germany's useful and high speed autobahn system.

We then take a look at the naming system used on highways. What do the numbers means? What are the major north to south and east to west highways? Why do some have even and odd numbers, and why do some have three digits instead of two? What about Alaska, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico? All of these questions are answered in this part of the video.

Finally, we take a look at some of the procs and cons of the Interstate Highway System. What are some of the economic and strategic gains? Why might there be some drawbacks? We examine cases where highways may have intentionally or unintentionally contributed to racism and classism, or other situations like the San Francisco Embarcadero or Alaskan Way Viaduct where highways hurt what could potentially be economically prosperous waterfront regions.

This video is meant to provide a comprehensive overview of the history, current state, and possible future of the Interstate System. If you enjoyed this video, be sure to like and subscribe!
