Industrialised societies have long pursued the goal of making all possible areas economically viable in an exploitative manner. When animal and plant species are becoming extinct and ecosystems are collapsing, nature conservation is becoming more and more economically viable.
Just as the climate movement demands climate justice, there needs to be justice in nature conservation. The example of national parks shows that without justice in nature conservation, indigenous people are driven from their areas or even killed.
80% of the worldwide diversity of all known living species is currently on the land of indigenous peoples, because they generally maintain regenerative lifestyles that do not pollute ecosystems.
A system change in nature conservation is necessary. "Solutions" such as CO2 offsetting, "Natural Climate Solutions" or "green capitalism" projects won't save life on the planet. Especially if nothing is done to address over consumption in the global north and the industries and governments responsible for biodiversity loss.
We are starting the #NatureNeedsJustice campaign from the global north to reflect on responsibility and our thoughts and actions. The campaign aims to raise awareness that nature conservation, then and now, is often linked to racism and colonialism, and to identify solutions for equitable nature conservation that protects human rights and biodiversity at the same time.
