Life too short for long YouTube videos? Please see the ‘Interesting bits and go-to sections’ information below.

This is the second video from our October 2017 trip to Bethel, Connecticut to meet one of the boutique effects world’s true pioneers: Mike Piera, aka Analog Man. The first one is here: https://youtu.be/CHtG8C5xmSk

Analog Man's Sun Face Fuzz is a modern remake of the classic Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face, first made famous of course by Jimi Hendrix. Mike has developed an especially deep understanding of what makes a great Fuzz Face-style circuit thanks to years of constant experimentation and learning. You can now buy a Sun Face Fuzz with a seemingly bewildering array of options and choices… including the all-important transistors.
In this video we compare two silicon and two germanium options (yes, there are many more, we know!). The rest of the circuit is exactly the same, so the differences you are hearing are purely in the specific transistors selected for each pedal.

Key takeaways from this video:
Mike’s Sun Faces sound and feel exceptional.
There clearly are differences in the sound and feel of different transistors, but they are not //radically// different.
With the addition of the bias control and internal clean trimpot, the dear old Fuzz Face style circuit can be incredibly versatile and inspiring.

The first comments are likely to be ‘why didn’t you demo the so-and-so variant?’ The answer is because we had limited time, and we prefer to go deeper on a fewer number of pedals than skim over a lot. We’re sorry if we missed your pedal.

And no, we didn’t get into sagging batteries. These were powered with new batteries, exactly as they’re shipped from Analog Man.

Finally, we’re sorry about the video quality/colour. //Insert excuses about struggling with different cameras and changing light here//. Next time we’ll take Simon!

Please enjoy the video…
