The senior year of high school is broken - it leads to: apathy, procrastination and a lack of preparation for the proverbial "real world". The problem is, it is designed like every other year of compulsory education which only prepares the students for - the next year of compulsory education - which in this case, never comes. The solution I offer is how a multi-disciplinary, independent learning setting could change the dynamic of the senior year of high school and possibly, prepare students to be more successful in a post-high school world, regardless of endeavor. Joshua Silberman is in his fifteenth year as a public school teacher, spending most of his teaching career as a faculty member of Challenge Early College High School. Since 2011 he has run the Leadership and Advisory programs on his campus after previously serving as an English teacher. He is alsocurrently the licensee/curator of TEDxChallengeEarlyCollegeHS as well as an AP Capstone instructor. He holds a B.A. in English – Creative Writing from the University of Houston as well as a M.Ed. in Educational Administration from the University of Texas – Austin.
