Industrial/cyber fans, prepare for something a little different!
Jason Bazinet nails his colours to the mast early in the first track, “In Your Blood”. The rapping came as a surprise to this electro-fueled semi-rivethead! He has a steady follow though, which is backed by various pianos, samples and electronics.
Track 2, “Metal Madness” explains further that hip-hop is just one of many element s bought to this intriguing project. Imagine Rap x EBM x Numetal all underpinned with a suave cyber-attitude. Industrial cynical themes and chunky riffs are delivered in unusual packaging.
“Endlust” turns up the metal a bit, to back a haunting, extended psycho philosophical diatribe, which is cold, brooding and apocalyptic. This rap/metal/electro vibe, combined with melodic riffage and thoughtful lyrics harks back to Linkin Park et al, but with much stronger electro/cyberpunk credentials - carrying on with nu-metal as if emo never happened!
“Somebody Dissin’ You” perhaps unsurprisingly, brings back the hip-hop elements, not challenging genre assumptions but attacking them head on in its lyrical content. We can’t complain that all genre bands sound the same, then also whine when someone does something quite different, is what SMP want to tell you! There is also a certain Mindless Self Indulgence-like couldn’t give a fuck attitude to it all.
That said, it is still an acquired taste and I personally didn’t feel these disparate elements melded very naturally on this track.
“I’m Falling” is actually a quiet yet foreboding affair, like a thunderstorm on a distant horizon. The creepy and experimental ambient soundscape gels much more fluidly with the rap style on this track.
“Earthlight” will zap you back to consciousness; fast, churning, noisy metal guitars meld into smooth elector-groove reminiscent of Justified’s United.
Suddenly, what the band is about comes to me on “Still Sick”. Thinking of the rapping combining with the more mainstream edge of industrial creates something retro but modern. They’re Kid Rock x Cyber-electro, Beastie Boys with a goth aesthetic, Cypress Hill minus the weed and plus the speed.
That probably didn’t fully explain the band’s uniqueness, but imagine all that melded into one and you’re there!
“What’s Wrong With You” brings in a politically angst edge which, up to now, was conspicuous by its absence. Think Biohazard shot forward in time to today!
“In the City” has a rounded, rich, rolling and textured outro which closes down this tri-polar album. SMP stand in the middle of a Hip-Hop/Metal/EBM ven diagram, and this unique sound will not be to everyone’s taste, but I for one enjoyed it both for its novelty and the entertaining musicianship involved, though I’m not sure it will end up being a regular listen, it will be occasional fun!
