VIDEO INFO: Recorded for an MTV broadcast at the Reunion Arena, Dallas TX; 19 September 1995 broadcast, this marks the period when, to my mind, the band fully defined their identity and character which previously had been slightly intangible even though they had been around for 15 years and shifted warehouse loads of their previous two albums while becoming the darlings of MTV rotation. Certainly, the 1995 ‘Monster’ album seemed rawer and more fun than previous releases, but crucially it marked the beginning of their reputation as a live phenomenon because, astonishingly, this was to be the first album they would tour in the 1990s.
Michael Stipe had simultaneously taken two remarkably brave steps for a frontman of one of the world’s biggest bands at a time when media scrutiny of such people had never been more intense. Firstly he came out, which probably didn’t shock anybody, but more starkly he accepted baldness and left that rather niche club of blue-chip rock stars condemned to obsessively wear a perpetual rotation of silly hats while fooling no one.
This ‘Borg’-like assimilation would, of course, remain his look for the rest of their career, giving an authentic, timeless face to the cerebral angst that characterised so many of the lyrics of which he was the main writer and certainly didn’t harm their success, which continued an upward trajectory for many years to come.
