I remember a few years back I went to a cosmetic clinic wanting to get lip fillers, and instead of getting fillers the Dr told me that I’d benefit more from getting my ‘nose fixed’. He said it looked like it had been broken, and that it was off centre. I thanked him for his professional opinion, politely declined booking in for the nose job, went back to my car and burst into tears.

What he’d said had actually cemented how I’d already felt about my nose since I was a kid. That it was big. Flat. Crooked. Ugly. I longed to have the petite, ski slope, barbie nose that other girls had. That my beautiful mum and sister had naturally. I was annoyed that I’d been born with this big ugly nose. I knew I’d look prettier with a smaller nose. So I began to save up for that nose job. I edited it in all my pictures.

And then I grew up.

And realised that being generically pretty, is pretty boring. And that I like my unique features. And actually, a small nose would look daft on me because I have big features. It wouldn’t look right. And I love the fact that I can see my own nose when I look at my ancestors. My great grandad has my nose. So did my Nanna. So do I. Now I don’t really mind that it’s slightly crooked. I don’t mind that it curves down the ‘wrong way’ when I smile. I like that it widens when I laugh. It suits me and it’s mine 👃
