When the first World War ended in 1918 the people found themselves in a new world. A world in which monarchies were not the usual form of state anymore. During the course of the wartime and in the immediate aftermath the Russian, German, Austro-Hungarian and Ottoman Empire were no more. The landscapes we knew until then, were changed forever. New countries formed, gaining their independence. The former monarchs were forced into exile or were even brutally murdered - like in the case of Tsar Nicholas II and his immediate family. What reminds us of a world that seems unreal to today's standards, is what we find left around us. From the courts we can now visit as museums to the history forever written in our textbooks.
