STORYLINE
Three protesters died during clashes between police and demonstrators in the Ukrainian capital of Kiev on Wednesday, the first
violent deaths in protests that are likely to drastically escalate the political crisis that has gripped Ukraine since late November.
According to Ukrainian prosecutors, two protesters died after being shot with live ammunition.
Another protester also died Wednesday after falling from a high point near the clashes, said the head of the protesters' volunteer medical corps.
Helmeted riot police moved in on hundreds of protesters Wednesday afternoon, beating and firing rubber bullets at some and sending people running.
The police were driving demonstrators down a hill toward the main protest site on Independence Square, where demonstrators have set up an extensive tent camp and rallied around the clock.
There was no immediate police move on the main camp.
Despite heavy snowfall and freezing temperatures, protesters' numbers swelled and the crowds managed to push back hundreds of riot police into a government district adjacent to Kiev's Independence Square.
The police regrouped and, in the early afternoon broke from their line and swooped in on a group of protesters, hitting them with batons, but as numbers increased again, the police were pushed back into a unified line at the end of the street once more.
Ukraine's two month-long political crisis has shifted into a new phase after President Viktor Yanukovych pushed through harsh anti-protest laws last week that were widely seen as an attempt to quash the demonstrations calling for his resignation.
The mass protests in Kiev, the capital, erupted after Yanukovych spurned a pact with the European Union in favour of close ties with Russia, which offered him a 15 (b) billion US dollar bailout.
The three main opposition parties issued a statement blaming Yanukovych and his staunch ally Interior Minister Vitali Zakharchenko for the deaths.
