Welcome to the Mauritius Postal Museum, where we will explore the history of postal services in Mauritius from their inception to the present day. The museum is located in one of the oldest historic buildings on the Port Louis waterfront. Construction of the post office began in 1865 and it was inaugurated in 1868. It houses today the most famous and expensive stamps in the world, the blue Mauritius and red Mauritius of 1847. Only 500 orange-red one-pence and 500 dark blue two-pence denominations were produced. The few surviving legendary postage stamps of Mauritius are among the most sought after and well known stamps in the world. All 1,000 stamps of 1847 were sold soon after they were issued. Only fifteen One Penny specimens (including two unused) and twelve Two Pence specimens (including four unused) have survived. Most of them are now in permanent museum collections. A set of two unused stamps was purchased by a consortium of leading Mauritian companies in 1993 and is on display at the Mauritius Postal Museum in Port Louis.
