Track 6 from his sixteenth solo album “Magic and Loss” released in 1992 copyright Sire Records. This concept album was initially going to be about magic, but when two of Reed’s close friends became terminally ill and eventually died, he expanded the focus to include loss and death. It was mostly well received by critics as another strong album, and was his most successful on the U.K. album chart. Mike Rathke, from the previous album “New York”, continued as the guitarist in Lou’s backup band. He co-wrote several songs and also co-produced the album. Written and produced by Lou Reed & Mike Rathke. RIP Lou Reed. Featuring:

Lou Reed – Lead vocals, acoustic, lead & rhythm guitars
Mike Rathke – Lead & rhythm guitars
Rob Wasserman – Bass
Michael Blair – Drums, percussion & background vocals
Special Guests:
Roger Moutenot – Background vocals
Little Jimmy Scott – Background vocals

Sittin' on a hard chair tryin' to sit straight
Sitting on a hard chair, this moment won't wait
Listening to the speakers, they're talkin' about you
Look at all the people, all the people you knew

Sitting with my back straight, it becomes hard to hear
Some people are crying, it becomes hard to hear
I don't think you'd have liked it, you would have made a joke
You would have made it easier, you'd say "tomorrow, I'm smoke"

Sitting on a hard chair, how far we have come
Tryin' hard to listen to your friends who have come
Some of them are famous and some are just like me
Tryin' hard to listen, trying hard to see

Sitting on a hard chair, it's over, time to stand
Some people are crying, I turn to grab your hand
It's your daughter saying thank you, you, you would have made a joke
"Isn't this something," you say, "tomorrow, I'm smoke"

Sittin' on a hard chair, it's over, time to stand
Some people are cryin', I turn to grab your hand
It's your daughter sayin' thank you, you, you would have made a joke
"Isn't this something," you say, "tomorrow, I'm smoke"
