One of the most highly respected performers in Brazil, Leila Pinheiro has a career spanning 30 years, 16 albums recorded and released in Brazil and Japan, and over one million albums sold. What marks her style as a performer is her ability to sing Brazilian music in all its styles - classic to contemporary - giving a special touch to Bossa Nova, ballads and samba. Finally given her first worldwide release with 'Ceu e Mar' it will open Leila's beautiful sound to European and American audiences. Possessing a deep, rich vocal Leila combines with guitarist Nelson Faria who brings a unique technique and chemistry to this Carioca duo. Inspired by the duo of Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Pass, they offer intimate and beautiful renditions of songs by Brazilian classic composers such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Ivan Lins, Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Marcos Valle, Edu Lobo, Dori Caymmi and João Donato.
Leila Pinheiro has released music on all the major Brazilian imprints including Polygram, EMI, Universal and Biscoito Fino and now adds the most influential Brazilian label outside of Brazil -- Far Out Recordings -- to release her latest project 'Ceu e Mar' ('Sky & Sea') with long-time collaborator and friend Nelson Faria, which re-discovers classic Brazilian cuts such as Doce Presença (Ivan Lins/Vitor Martins), Sucedeu Assim (Antonio Carlos Jobim/Marino Pinto) and That old devil called love (Doris Fisher/Allan Roberts).
Instrumentalist, arranger and composer Nelson Faria trained in L.A. with the chord melody master Ted Greene before returning to Brazil where Faria became one of the most important names for guitar workshops, seminars, recording sessions and concerts performing and recording with artists including Ivan Lins, Milton Nascimento, João Bosco, Gonzalo Rubalcaba and Toninho Horta. Nelson Faria has released seven albums, six books and worked as arranger and guest soloist for the likes of North Sea Jazz festival.
Leila Pinheiro was born in Belém, in the northern Brazilian state of Pará. She started playing the piano and ten years later dropped out of medical school to devote herself full-time to her musical career. In 1981 Pinheiro moved to Rio de Janeiro where she has recorded and toured between trips to Japan (to promote the album 'OLHO NU' to win Best Vocal Performance representing Brazil at the Yamaha World Popular Song Festival, 1987), Europe (where Leila toured in 1993 for the first time through Belgium, Netherlands, France and Spain), and the United States (invited in 1996 to New York to take part in a Carnegie Hall show entitled "All Jobim" and again in 2000 as a guest musicians in "Brazilian Things" at the Lincoln Center Out Of Doors in New York with Bebel Gilberto before a show later that year with singers Ivan Lins and Ed Motta that went coast to coast.
'Ceu e Mar' takes both special performers to their widest audience yet with a gorgeous, classic Brazilian set.
