The human egg is fertilized by either conventional In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) or Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). At 16 hours post fertilization, the egg highlights signs of fertilization as the male and female DNA come together. At around 24 hours post fertilization the fertilized zygote undergoes the first division to form a 2-cell embryo.
The embryo continues to divide. And 2 days following fertilization, the embryo reaches 4 cell stage and on day 3 becomes around an 8 cell stage embryo.
The embryo grows further dividing from 8 cell to 16 cells from 16 cells to 32 cells, then makes the transition to reach morula stage.
The morula stage embryo progresses. This is followed by early signs of cavitation and blastocyst formation takes place. The embryo reaches the blastocyst stage on day 5, at this stage the process of implantation begins.
