How to Treat Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) | Light Therapy Lamp? | Doctor ER. What is the best treatment for seasonal affective disorder (SAD)? Commonly known as seasonal depression or the winter blues. What are the causes of SAD? Do SAD light boxes really work to treat depression or other mood disorders? Board-Certified Emergency Medicine Physician, Dr. Jordan Wagner, explains everything you need to know on the causes and treatment of seasonal affective disorder and just how effective light therapy box treatment is, known as light boxes, bright light therapy boxes and phototherapy boxes. With clocks falling back an hour this weekend for daylight savings time, having less sunlight might have a great impact on your mental health. Especially during the COVID-19 pandemic, more people are experiencing anxiety and depression. And with the reduction of sunlight, once daylight saving time takes place, it just might make matters worse. Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that's related to changes in seasons. However, there are concerns that the isolation and anxiety caused by the COVID-19 pandemic may intensify symptoms for many people. Also known as seasonal depression or the winter blues. SAD begins and ends at about the same time every year. If you're like most people with SAD, your symptoms start in the fall and continue into the winter months, making a great impact on your daily energy mood. Less often, SAD causes depression in the spring or early summer. Treatment for SAD may include light therapy (phototherapy), medications, and psychotherapy. Light therapy is meant to compensate for the lack of exposure to sunlight that is thought to be linked to major depressive disorder with seasonal patterns. If you have any medical questions, don’t forget to send them my way, I’d love to hear them! Thanks so much for watching. Stay healthy, my friends!
