Welcome to this Girls in Tech Day STEM Topic: Engineering/ Paper Engineering

This is a hands-on STEM activity for schools
Learn the Paper Engineering Skills to Make a Castle Book from one sheet of paper

Have you ever seen a pop up book? For me, there is something awe inspiring about watching them move. It always amazes me what you can create from a sheet of paper.
In this activity you will develop some paper engineering skills, that is, the skills needed to create a castle that folds flat into a book.

Each activity gives a student a template and the steps to make something exciting from one sheet of paper.

Students love to make things and to be creative. The activities make learning STEM hands on, experiential, memorable. The activities make engineering come alive in their hands. They allow the kids to take something home with them.

The learning out comes are: engineering, math concepts, paper engineering skills, fine motor skills, and visualising in three dimensions. Folding paper for paper engineering projects make fractions and geometry come alive in a student’s hands.

This activity is one in a series of ten hands-on learning activities that are delivered online to schools. Each activity has STEM content, that is science, Tech, Engineering or Maths. They can be used in the classroom or for online/remote learning.

I’ll explain how this works. First, the teacher downloads the PDF file. This file includes: the project template, an instruction sheet and a background information sheet.

Secondly, the teacher prints out one project template for each student.

Then, the teacher and the students watch the video that introduces the STEM topic and demonstrates how to cut and fold the template to make it into an impressive three-dimensional project.

There is an instruction sheet that has clear step-by-step photos and written descriptions. That means all students can follow the steps even if they can’t stream video because of slow internet speeds at home. Lastly, a background information sheet so students can dive into the topic in more depth.

This series is targeted at students eight to fourteen years old. They can be used as a resource for schools year after year. Each activity gives a student a template and the steps to make something exciting from one sheet of paper (a paper engineering project).
