Gripping, grabbing, clutching, clinging — the great ape hand is essential in manipulating the world we live in. And the key to that hand is our amazing opposable thumbs. Apes like us clutch life with a powerful grip, something we have been doing for a good.. oh... 16 million-plus years or so, to be almost, sorta, kinda, exact.

In 1963 when Jane Goodall saw chimpanzees at termite mounds using sticks to fish for termites to eat, we realized using our hands to make things, like tools, was not the exclusive provenance of humans. Shortly after Dr. Goodall discovered chimps making and using tools that prompted famed bone sleuth Louis Leakey quipped, "Now we must redefine tool, redefine Man, or accept chimpanzees as humans." Chimps of course aren't humans, but they like us, gorillas, bonobos, and orangutans are ApesLikeUs.
