George Harrison became a friend of Leon Russell's through Delaney & Bonnie. George had Leon at the piano for a few Apple artists that George produced, including Doris Troy, Badfinger and Jackie Lomax. Leon also added some guitar to a song or two by Badfinger during sessions for their album Stright Up, which George left abruptly (with Leon in tow) to put together the August 1, 1971 Concert for Bangla-Desh.
Six years into their relationship, George and Leon were at a session in Hollywood in late April 1975 recording George's lament about the nightclub scene titled "Tired of Midnight Blue." It took 168 takes to complete to George's satisfaction, which Leon found quite nerving, as he was basically a one-take musician. The song went on George's Extra Texture album, along with "You" from a 1971 session.
