Update: So far the 80/20 hardware (bolts and T-nuts) hold up against the wet costal marine layer at night. No rust observed after about 3 weeks now. For similar black coated hardware I bough from ACE hardware or budget brand (Faztek) 80/20 knock-offs from Amazon are visibly rusted. Need to replace them with either stainless or 80/20 brand. Will keep you posted after a longer term observation.

Update: Just had a 200+ mile freeway trip. MPG = 21.2. That is the same as before rack/awning installation. So the rack had no negative impact to gas mileage.

There are a lot of options in the market for van roof rack. But none of them are inexpensive. In this video, I want to show you a DIY option. You can build a strong, good looking, versatile, expendable, reconfigurable roof rack using 80/20 extruded aluminum profiles and hardwares in more reasonable budget. The beauty is you don't have to follow my design. You can use the idea and make it your own and unique roof rack once you know the possibility.
