The Undergraduate Writing Programme (in a special partnership with the Ashoka PPE Society) recently conducted on 14th April, 2022, the first offline instalment of Track Changes, our flagship speaker series featuring author and World Bank economist Shrayana Bhattacharya in conversation with the students of Ashoka University about her widely acclaimed book Desperately Seeking Shah Rukh: India's Lonely Young Women and the Search for Intimacy and Independence.

Shrayana Bhattacharya trained in development economics at Delhi University and Harvard University. Since 2014, in her role as an economist at the World Bank, she has focused on issues related to social policy and jobs. Prior to this, she worked on research projects with the Centre for Policy Research, SEWA Union and Institute of Social Studies Trust. Her writing has appeared in the Indian Express, EPW, Indian Quarterly and The Caravan.
The UWP regularly organizes conversations with eminent individuals from The Academy and beyond, to give students an opportunity to interact with some of the most active practitioners of critical thinking and writing. Our first event featured Ananth Padmanabhan, CEO of HarperCollins India and literary publisher Udayan Mitra. Subsequent events have included a panel on Academic Publishing in the Global South, and speaker sessions with popular novelist Anuja Chauhan, historian and Member of Parliament Jairam Ramesh, author and journalist Samanth Subramanian, Urvashi Butalia (the founder of India's first feminist publishing house Zubaan), physician and researcher Dr Ruma Satwik, writer Anindita Ghose, journalist Anoo Bhuyan, writer Sharanya Manivannan and author (and actress) Mira Sethi. These sessions feature long exchanges between the students and speakers, and are intended to complement the critical thinking experience at Ashoka.
