Lightning is just static electricity on a large scale. It's nothing more that a build up of electrons collecting into one small spot. People say the word "want" to help understand why something works a certain way. Positive and negative charges want to equalize much like a magnet attracts to another magnet with opposite poles. A lightning rod provides a safer path to ground and helps reduces the build up of an opposing charge by bleeding off the build up of "static" or stationary energy. This is much like putting hole in a balloon to bleed off pressure before it pops from over filling.
