Krampus is a creature who accompanies St. Nicholas on his journey. While St. Nicholas rewards nice children by leaving presents, Krampus punishes the ones who misbehaved during the year.

He is a seven-foot tall, hairy beast, depicted as having bulging eyes, a whip-like tongue, pointed ears and horns on his head, as well as claws and fangs. He walks on two legs, dressed in chains and bells that he shakes at people on the street. He also carries a branch of birch rods or a horsehair whip and a large sack or basket. The birch rods and whip are used to beat naughty children, but the sack is reserved for the truly wicked. Krampus uses it to bring young evildoers to the underworld.

The creature and St. Nicholas arrive on the evening of December 5th, also known as Krampus-Night. Krampus originated in Germany, and his name derives from the German word Krampen, which means “claw”. The story of Krampus folklore can be traced back as early as around the 1600s. Krampus was thought to have been part of pagan rituals for the winter solstice. According to legend, he is the son of Hel, the Norse god of the underworld. Other people believe that Krampus represents the Horned God, an ancient Celtic god, and that his birch rods are a throwback to ancient initiation rituals.

When Christians replaced pagan winter festivals with Christmas, Krampus underwent a transformation. He was associated with the devil, and he was placed in a subservient position to Saint Nicholas, being forced to wear chains to show his inferiority. In the 1920s, the Catholic Church and some political parties in Germany and Austria put a ban on Krampus. But Krampus lived on in German and Austrian tradition, and by the 1960s, he was allowed to come back into the light.
