First video with on-screen tab!

Tell me if you like the on-screen tab and if you'd like to see more of those, or if you just prefer the guitar pro version without it being in the video. (The weird cursor movement in the tab comes from the different fps of tab video and finished video). Links to the tabs are provided at the bottom of the description!

Here's "Two-Pound Torch" by Cryptopsy. There's no personal story to this, only the usual background information that I provide to every song I cover here. A few years ago I asked them if they needed a 2nd guitar player but I don't even remember if I got an answer. While I'm still not known, at that time I was just some guy on the internet without a portfolio. That has changed over the years, so now I have a bit more "credibility" when I contact musicians. But that's the only personal thing here.

So what can I share about Cryptopsy? They were one of the first few extreme death metal bands I got into. I think I was 17. For anyone wondering how my taste changed back then: I had the nu-metal phase with Slipknot being my favourite band when I was 15, then it was the Children Of Bodm "lite death-metal" phase until I was 17/18. This was the phase where I made most progress in my beginner years and then it was the extreme metal phase with Necrophagist and Psycroptic being the transitioning bands. Among the bands that came after that were Cryptopsy. That was actually the last "phase" I had. (Not 100% true, I had a light sumerian-core phase with Veil Of Maya as my favourite band) While death metal is still somewhat home to my musician roots I don't consider myself part of any metal subgenre or whatever you want to call it. I'm just a guy doing music....basically just a musician. My last big discoveries in music were actually Tigran Hamasyan and Noisia.

Back to Cryptopsy: The track that caught my attention those years ago was Phobophile with that distinct melodic tremolo picking riff/melody. When you're a 17 year old Children of Bodom fan-girl it's hard to get into that music when you don't have any element you can grab on that feels familiar. That melody was one of those. And with Necropagist and Psycroptic I sort of eased into that extreme music. Cryptopsy were always different than these though. Over the top with its sound more being rooted in old-school death metal.

As with Spawn Of Possession I learned all the tabs that were available on riversofgore with None So Vile being my favourite Cryptopsy album. The one thing I always hated about them though was that at times they were too over-the-top. And their production was not as good as I wanted it to be back then. That changed with their self-titled album. A modern production where you can hear everything. That's where my interest for the band came back (I sort of skipped Once Was Not. I did like The Unspoken King though. Feel free to bash me lol)

I had the half-finished tab for a few years now. I failed at the ending. Now my transcribing skills are better and funny enough it was not really hard to figure it out. It's the same notes and rhythm as the palm muted part that comes after that. The over-top style made it hard to hear but with some logic and experience it was possible. This song was still unfinished business for me since I wanted to do a cover years ago.

To the video and a little heads-up: I'll not keep up with the one video a week schedule. For now it's too demanding and doesn't really allow me to do anything else. While I like making videos I wanted to focus on original music and this schedule doesn't allow for that. I still have a few cover songs but I'll slow it down a bit.So when shooting this video I was not really in the mood for it, neither for recording nor editing anything. That's why it's only one camera angle with the tab. I'm in a little rut right now, but I still wanted to get this done. It's not my best performance and this time my guitar is lower in the mix. I couldn't get a satisfying sound and this was the best compromise.

Also for some reason, and this is something I always had trouble with, 220bpm is a hard tempo for me. I was kinda surprised to figure out that it's only 220bpm when I mapped the tempos for the on-screen tab. It definitely feels faster. But as you can see, there are a few tempo changes. They either didn't play to a click or meticulously programmed a click track to make it groove more. (I think it's the latter) So yeah, 220bpm is a "transitioning" tempo for me. It's still "slow" enough to play with force but too fast to do that for long stretches. And that's the issue in this song.

Enjoy the video and the tabs! They differ a bit. One is the actual tab that I play in the video and the other one is the album version (6-string, different fingerings and slight changes)
