Sky Kid, 1985 Namco (20 From 1985 #15)

Cutesy Namco classic-- which may not have been released in the US in its original arcade form (but as the NES port)-- in which you are a bird flying a biplane (what??) and shooting down enemies on sea, land and in air, as well as bombing targets like battleships, airships and fortresses. But your main goal is simply to reach the end of each forced-scrolling stage (to the left, which was unusual for a forced-scrolling game) and touch down on the landing strip; missing the landing strip causes you to run out of fuel (there is no visible gauge or anything) and die. A cool feature about this game is that you can otherwise save yourself from a fall, which happens when you collide with an enemy or get shot: Press UP on the joystick and WAIL on the B button. The B button makes you do a quick loop. Not only is this button helpful in getting out of a tailspin but it can get you behind enemies that try to sneak up on you or get you out of their line of fire. Note that some of the ground cannons have a wide blast radius with their firepower, and overuse of the loop button can put you right back in harm's way. Note that you do not get much points for most enemies, but after touching down at the end of a stage you will start getting bonus points if you shot enough enemies. If you hit at least 10 ground and/or air targets you will get points, and more if you got multiples of 10 (20, 30, 40, etc.). If you bomb the main target dead center (it has 3 parts-- left, center and right), you will get 10,000 points. As you get further into the game there will be more than 1 target per stage and you will get less points if you only bombed one. As for the bomb, you will be prompted that it is about to appear. Just pick it up off the ground, but remember-- get shot by/collide with an enemy and you will drop it! You will now be unable to destroy the target with it (but if you have multiple targets on a stage you will get another bomb for the next one). Most enemies don't give much points for destroying during a stage but some net 500 or 1,000 points. Many of these are submarines that poke out of the surface, or balloon riders for which you need to shoot both the balloon and the rider for 500 points. Also, numerous hidden bonuses are in this game in the guise of Namco characters (Pac-Man, Pac-Man ghost, Galaga medal, Special Flag from Rally-X, or Pooka from Dig Dug) and you can also uncover silly things like flipping up the Statue Of Liberty's skirt (!) or making a jack-in-the-box out of a building by pressing the loop button near it. Great fun, but difficult to outmaneuver the enemy fire or anticipate their moves sometimes. 21 stages in all. Great NES port, which was actually released on the Nintendo VS. arcade cabinet as either VS. SKY KID or VS. SUPER SKY KID. Arcade sequel: SKY KID DELUXE. I have videos of both VS. SUPER SKY KID and SKY KID DELUXE, I believe. Thanks for watching-- I was initially intending to have more console reviews, but something wasn't working right with them so I'm back to 1985. Someone get me a time machine; I miss the 80s! (though if I went back, I would also miss the internet)
