You can tell Bruce Melodie likes to have fun. Just check the look on his face when he's playing the air flute at the beginning of his "When She's Around" video with Shaggy. Nothing but a puckish grin and an anything-goes sparkle in his eyes. But wait! The Rwandan rapper and Jamaican OG have something in common other than the instantly infectious grooves of "When She's Around," which really took off in the latter part of 2023. When the East African star was a kid, he caught a show by Mr. Boombastic. Yes, he was impressed. Cut to 2013, when young Melodie went from a talented church choir singer to a wannabe upstart dropping “Tubivemo” from his debut album 'Ndumiwe.' And then cut to the way his audience multiplied in the decade hence. From the reggae inflections of 2019's "Katerina" to the dreamy vibe of 2020's "Ikinyafu," to the sleek riddims of last year's "Azana (Agati)," he's refined his work at every turn. The delirium of fans followed in suit. When he shared the track of "When She's Around" with Shaggy, the vet had ideas about enhancing its crossover potential. The Swahili vocals were reduced and the pop sheen was bolstered. Now Mr. M is rocking Jingle Ball performances and chatting it up with Elvis Duran. More visibility, more impact.
