I've always thought, personally, that Ben's best songs are love songs. The temperament of his love songs usually ranges between playful and painful. Someone is usually leaving, or left and came back. They're asking for forgiveness or dealing with pain. Grace's Casket is my personal favorite, and the list is decently long at least. This one is a little more earnest than the others. He rarely has seemed to write so directly about honest, soft, long love. No one is leaving, no one has plans of going anywhere ("i'm too old for gettin gone"). No ultimatums, no judgement, no anger. It is good to see some evolution in the approach to the subject matter, one that reflects maturity and acceptance with the passing of time.

Like any relationship, i'm sure Ben and Ashley's is complicated. Over the years i've come to see, as tough as it is, they seem to keep each other sane. Sane as one can be anyway. Ben seems to thrive with a little bit of order, and I think that's true for a lot of us. I wouldn't want to live with Ben for 10 years, so good on Ashley. Hard to imagine ten years has passed at all, and I know they would've been a lot different had things turned out any other way. So sing a love song to the ones you love, and stop blaming them for what's wrong with you.
