Visitors to this channel might notice that I have a habit of posting recordings of tenors in old age. While I am fascinated with recordings of tenors who kept their voices intact well into their twilight years, I also love a good recording of a great tenor in his prime. This is a fine example of that. This is a recording of the beloved Italian tenor, Beniamino Gigli (1890-1957) singing Vasco da Gama's aria "O Paradiso" from Meyerbeer's opera L'Africana. This was made around 1929, when Gigli was not yet forty years old and in his absolute vocal prime. Although I have enjoyed many, many recordings of this powerful aria, I am hard pressed to find one that surpasses or even equals this version. You may disagree with me on that point, but you have to admit that this is some damn fine singing.
