This song was written in 1935 by Lucille Bogan, a blues singer who was well known for being bi-sexual and singing about the queer woman’s experience. She was considered part of the ‘dirty’ blues genre - songs that were often deemed obscene and banned at the time. For me, this song champions female masculinity and female sexuality in a way that not even many modern songs do!
