2008: Tokyo Police Club 'Cheer It On'

Tokyo Police Club made a joyful, but very noisy noise during Canadian Music Week 2008, with their angular pop, martial guitar lines, post-punk keyboards and pop-friendly vocals. Guitarist Josh Hook seems to be having a conversation all of his own with his guitar. Keyboardist Graham Wright dances, chants and plays his keyboard like a man holding on for dear life. And front man-bassist David Monks looks like a greasy-haired Justin Beiber, can he see through those bangs? What could be more fun?

Performing “Cheer It On” from their 2006 EP A Lesson In Crime, they opened with guitar noise, which quickly morphed into a song, in a manner reminiscent of bands like the Jesus And Mary Chain. The off-kilter, swooping camera, and pseudo-psychedelic light show made the experience feel like “Top Of The Pops” from an alternate dimension.

Newmarket, Ontario’s Tokyo Police Club formed in 2005. Since then they’ve released 4 albums, 2 EPs and 12 singles, 4 of which have appeared on the Canadian Charts. They’ve appeared on David Letterman, Craig Ferguson, and the Desperate Housewives.

2014 HD multi-camera edit, assembled from 2008 tracks and SD clips.
