"Paris-Berlin: Love Against Hate" is the story of an amazing marriage between an artistic free spirit, the glamorous French music hall dancer Jacqueline Hottinger, known professionally by the chic English name “Line Jack,” and her husband, the handsome, chivalrous Kurt Laurentius, from an old, conservative Berlin family, long established in the German silk industry. It is the story of their romantic, passionate marriage in the face of the turbulent years of the Third Reich when, as a foreign “enemy,” Jacqueline was forced to stay in Berlin while her French family both suffered in Paris and yet used all of their own resources to withstand the German occupation of the City of Light. Between Kurt and Jacqueline is their only child and daughter, Christiane, who, as an 8-year-old child, must learn to survive often on her own, and also withstand terrible deprivations when Jacqueline is forced to leave their somewhat secure life in a distinguished, wealthy quarter of Berlin and take Christiane out into the countryside simply to find food to feed her child.
On these terrible trips out of Berlin, Jacqueline must use all of her skills and talents to keep her and her child alive: as a brash, Sally Bowles-type entertainer; as a seductive, extremely stylish Parisian woman; and finally as a complete survivor, hiding German corpses when necessary, sleeping with the enemy for food, and yet longing for the husband she loves who has been enlisted by force into the German army, and soon after almost mortally wounded.
