From my friend Betty's collection comes this recording from the early years of the 20th Century. "I Could Learn to Love You When You Smile, Smile, Smile" was a song hit from "In Panama," a musical comedy that opened September 2, 1907 at the Broadway Theatre in New York. It seems that in the play, the song was performed by a male and a female chorus, with the lyrics beginning with "We" rather than "I." Here, Ada Jones and Billy Murray perform a more personal variation of the song. The two recorded many duets together, beginning in 1906 through about 1918.

"I have always loved those simple maids
With golden braids
And eyes of blue, Dear.
I have met a lot of hall-room boys
Who made a noise
The same as you, Dear.
I could make a sound like money too,
To win from you
A smile or two, Dear.
I can't keep from smiling every time
I look at you!

I could learn to love you, Dearie,
When I see you smile.
There's a look so bashful in your eyes
That convinces me you're not too wise.
Cuddle up beside me, Dearie!
Hold my hand a while.
I could learn to love you,
When you smile, smile, smile!

Just beware of maids with eyes of brown.
Who wear a frown,
They'll throw you down, Dear.
If I stick to maids with eyes of blue
The same as you,
What would you do, Dear?
Marry you,
Then we could dress in style,
Just spend your pile,
Perhaps we'd smile, Dear.
Go and get a Pittsburg millionaire,
Then you could laugh out loud!
