I did one mainstream game fan-trailer for Gears of War, so here's a more obscure game just for fun!

Roland is a storied figure very underrepresented in modern times although he has several epic poems concerning his life and death. Greg Roach combined several stories with his own additions to craft a psychological legend of religion, war, lust, and regret. In the interactive multimedia novel you could switch between perspectives of characters and between historical truth and dreams or impressions the characters had of events. A film version could be similarly surreal, blending myth and reality.
I simplified the story a bit to where I think it might fit a film.
The main plot is a love triangle between the heroic Roland, the lady Angelica, and his personified legendary sword Durendal. This struggle eventually leads to a breakdown in which Roland turns his weapon on his own men, but King Charlemagne needs his reputation unsullied with the upcoming siege of Paris looming. No one is to remember his deeds of madness.
No one...except the noble night himself.
Without the need for magic or mysticism you could tell a compelling story about a man struggling between his faith and his instincts, his sword and his heart, all with the backdrop of one of the oldest and most influential works of French literature in existence.
