John's Gospel and the first letter of John the Elder emphasize the call to abide in God and in God's love. This is possible because God has come to abide with us and has loved us first. Abiding in God is an active, not a passive, orientation of life. We draw life and love from God and we give it to others, thus bearing good fruit. Loving others is not an option for the Christian; it is a way of abiding in God. Hating others cuts us off from God as well as others, because God's love extends to all.
